About
Intro
The topic of our podcast is the ‘manosphere’. We mainly compare the differences in how the ‘manosphere’ is disseminated in Western and Eastern media. We then explore how different platforms influence the way information is communicated and how audiences understand it.
Because the members of our group come from different cultural backgrounds, so we took responsibility for the social media platforms within our own cultures. We have selected ‘TikTok’ and ‘Douyin’ as the mainly platforms for our analysis. ‘TikTok’ represents Western social media, and ‘Douyin’ represents Eastern social media. Although ‘TikTok’ and ‘Douyin’ are very similar platforms, they target entirely different audiences. Through our research, we have discovered that different cultures lead to completely different ways in ‘manosphere’ disseminated.
pre-production
In the very early stages of this project, we first organised an offline meeting. During the meeting, we directly confirmed the topic we wanted to research: the ‘manosphere’. We wanted to present our work in podcast. In dividing the work, we split the entire podcast into four episodes. At first, the topic of four episodes were: Introduction, Influencers, Audiences and Conclusion. However, during our process, we realized that the logic of this structure was not clear. We consequently changed the topics to: Introduction, Western Case, Eastern Case and Conclusion. As I am from China, I am responsible for the Eastern Case section. I am also handling part of the Conclusion. We researched specific case studies on social media platforms in both the West and the East, and analyzed them based on these concrete examples. We wrote all the scripts in a shared document. This allowed us to view the analyses completed by others at any time. This helped us learn from others, standardize the format, and ensure the logic was clearer.
production
We were each responsible for recording the parts of the script we had written. We adopted a single-narrator format for this podcast. I recorded the ‘Eastern Case’ and ‘Conclusion’ sections. The entire podcast was recorded in English. I practiced multiple times before the final recording to avoid making mistakes or long pause. To make the podcast sound more natural, I deliberately spoke slower, ensuring the audience could hear me more clearly.
post-production
As before, each of us was responsible for editing the sections we had recorded. Therefore, I was responsible for editing the ‘Eastern case’ and ‘Conclusion’ sections. Team member Isebal created the background image for the podcast video. While editing, I adjusted the audio levels to ensure that the volume remained consistent for each section. I removed unnecessarily long pauses and cut it to a suitable length. I also used the editing process to review all the content. We added subtitles to the video to help viewers understand the content. When adding the subtitles, I found that I had been too nervous during the recording and had missed a part of the content. So I re-recorded that part and correct the mistake.
